The first thing you have to remember is that not all NATO related essays require you to use NATO jargon. Some general topics do not. I know students who enjoy writing essays on the history of warfare and are surprised when I ask them to not use the military jargon associated with NATO. The second thing you have to understand is that, like any essay, a NATO related one has to be researched. You have to find out the context in which the piece was written, the political situation in the time it was written, the people and events it was published in, and the reasons for its publication. Some students come up with great ideas and topics, and others don't. Research plays a big role in being able to write about a topic that your audience will like. Good research can help you find topics that your audience likes, while also providing you with a lot of information that you might not otherwise be aware of. If you don't do the proper research, you may only write the first sentence about a topic, then realize you need to look it up, and then write the essay without fully researching it. And let's face it - nobody likes to read an essay that takes them hours to read! The last point you need to consider, though it is probably the most important of all, is that you must write the topic of your NATO related essay in the present tense. Because you are writing about something happening in the present, there is no point in using the past tense, but for most of the other parts of the essay, you should use present tense. Thenext most important point is to use the present tense for all the parts of the essay. This is because, while you can use the past tense for many parts of the piece, the present tense should always be used for the entirety of the essay. The reason this is so important is because it will make your essay less confusing and easier to read, and for most students, this is the first point they look at when they pick a topic to write. After you have written the first part of the essay, the last thing you need to do is to edit your piece to remove all of the mistakes that you made, and to ensure that the essay flows properly. Your purpose in writing this piece was to show the students how to create their own original essay, and this means that you have to ensure that you don't misspell words or leave any grammatical or spelling errors in your essay. For this reason, the first paragraph will be very important, as this is where you will show them where you can make common mistakes in their work. Most students will skim the first couple of paragraphs of your essay before they actually read the entire thing, and most of these students will have absolutely no idea what you mean. This is why the first paragraph is the most important.
